Electric cars
Brilliant, aren’t they?

Leasing an MG4 at the moment. Apart from one or two minor gripes, it’s absolutely fantastic. I’ll never go back to an ICE car.

Any of you lot drive an EV? What’s your experience with them?

Re: Electric cars
Never driven one myself but I’ve heard good things about them if the range is right.

However let’s not pretend they are a ‘green option’.

Re: Electric cars
I have one. The range is about 150-170 miles so only good for the shorter journeys. I get plenty of use out of it though and a decent drive.

The infrastructure in this country is still shit compared with mainland Europe, and the price is way too high. But as long as the big corporations can make record profits it’s all good.

Re: Electric cars
Iron Duke, is the price of a Tesla the same here as it is for Europe, should be as there all shipped in from America, or are us Brits being screwed over again?

They seem to repay their carbon deficit somewhere between 1 and 2 years, depending on how far you drive.

Given that there are lots of Leafs and Teslas still going strong after a decade or so, I really do think they are greener.

Personally speaking, as the father of an asthmatic son, I am very happy no longer to be pumping out diesel fumes.

Re: Electric cars
Gaffer. I should have been clearer. I meant that the price of charging up the battery on the road was too expensive. I think you pay double what you would pay at home, and that’s expensive enough.

Re: Electric cars
Okay for leasing, but i'd never buy one to own and definitely wouldnt consider a used one.

I prefer to own cars because i like to keep them - I bought a brand new SEAT Leon Cupra in 2008 and still own it now. I couldn't imagine how reduced the range with be in an electric car with 15 year old batteries in it.

Yes. Got a mustang. Biggest range has been 320 miles. Typically closer to 300. I’m on 100% every time I leave the office, so can’t complain.

I have been looking into this as am considering my next car.
I have 2 cars: A ten year old Skoda Oxtavia VRS and an eighteen year old Saab 93 convertible.
When the former finally dies the new one will replace that.
Most manufacturers guarantee 80% life for 100,000 miles plus with a couple covering up to 300,000.
You can increase that by being nice the battery e.g. Not ragging the car too often, charhing then to 100% or fast charging them a lot.
The NEVS Emily GT which was designed by ex-Saab engineers and is going into production soon but I suspect it will be very expensive.
A frien of mine has the little BMW EV and absolutely loves it. He was less keen on the Tesla 3 he had before that and gave it up as sson as his lease would allow it. He is lucky as he has a huge home solar installation and still makes money from the grid despite charging both his and his wife's cars at home.

Re: Electric cars
Jimmy T - article is behind a firewall.

In short they take longer to manufacture and so are more energy hungry.
The rare earth metals that are required have to be mined & shipped across the world. Not to mention there simply aren’t enough of these metals available to meet the forecast numbers of EV required.

And lastly it depends on how your electricity that goes into the car is produced.

I get that they're good, i just cant see how they're going to ever be a long term solution to the millions who love their cars and want to keep them for years, such as enthusiasts like me etc. They can promise 80% battery at 100,000k, but i dont know how they can guarantee that. My Cupra is now 15 1/2 years old and currently on 92k. Granted, its now my weekend toy, rather than my daily driver - i have a 2020 Jaguar XF, which ill keep for quiet a few years yet, but i can't see any manufacturer taking a call from a 15 year old electric car owner complaining about battery life depletion and honouring that guarantee.

I honestly think electric cars are a knee-jerk solution and better solutions and infrasturcture will be developed and become the actual ICE replacement. Hydrogren fuel cell cars, have potential for example.

I just think theres still a huge amount of people that would rather own their car and will shun electric cars because of the concern of the long term viability and worries about depreciation when there are examples of people with huge battery replacement bills etc.

Yes Jim, I bet a brand new electric car is brilliant. Bully for you.

Not so great for the poor fuckers who can't afford a brand new car.

Re: Electric cars
I've got a great pal who I sat with for twenty plus years at UP.

He moved to Bury St Edmunds and got a Motorbility car, a Vauxhall something or other and he FUCKING HATES IT.

It's more money to run than his last car, chargers are thin on the ground in Suffolk and are more likely to be broken than work.

If he wants to drive his motor he has to sit at the charging point for at least 45 minutes instead of the five he'd spend at the petrol pump and if he winds the windows down it takes his battery down to 95%, plugs his phone in and listens to the radio and if he goes and visits his mum in Barking it entails a one hour stop to juice the car back up again.

In short, he fucking HATES it.

Cars for people with money too burn. Small penises. And little imagination. ie: Hipster’s.
The power companies moan like fuck now. When everyone puts the kettle at half time during an England match. It ain’t going to be anywhere close to coping. At 18:00 when everyone gets home. And puts the old “Jam Jar.” On charge.!

Re: Electric cars
If someone gave me one, I'd give it away.
The term 'Emperors New Clothes' was made for these.

I get 490 mile from my current Ford, it takes me a few minutes to refill, and no need to panic when I get to the red line as I know a Petrol station will be round the corner in a few miles.

Even wonder about the impact on the planet for replaceing. millions of serviceable cars, the resources to make, transport and install a new charging infrastructure, generating the millions of KW of extra juice.... Nope maybe you haven't seen all of the sums yet..

Plus the resale price, and cost of replacement batteries, 75% or more people in this country can't currently afford one, and a large percentage don't have space or facility to home charge.

Keep yours, be happy with it, but not for me...

Re: Electric cars
I'll stick with petrol thanks.

Makes me laugh when you see vans and the like with "100% electric" on the back as if it's something to be proud of.

I'm going to get a sticker to put on mine "100% Petrol"

Re: Electric cars
I lease a new car every 3 years. For the last 3 renewals I've looked at electric but price-wise its no closer to being affordable now than it was 6 years ago. That's the first hurdle and it can't even get over that, never mind range and infrastructure.

Cost the same amount of £ per mile as a diesel car

Very quiet and a danger to those who are slightly deaf

Bad for the environment when you think about Lithium mining https://tinyurl.com/2v5pkwnd

I got a Skoda Enyaq about 4 months ago and fucking love it.

Fantastic car, good range and plenty of places to charge it up.

Best of all gives me an extra £375 a month in my pocket due to the tax.

Happy days.
